From Ana`s Diary
I’ve had a busy
couple of days, not just with practice but also some
other things. Yesterday I was part of an event with
adidas in St. Kilda, which is by the beach in Melbourne.
It was something different, I had never done anything
like this before. I was with the swimmer Jodie Henry and
we modelled our new outfits. She is a very nice girl and
hopefully I will see her again in the future.
It’s always great to meet athletes from other sports and talk a
little bit about training. We share a lot in common and
we can understand each other’s lifestyles. It was also
fun to walk on this catwalk they had in the swimming
pool. I was a bit nervous before it started because I
haven’t done much modelling before but it was a lot of
fun.
I also went to a player meeting and today there was a meeting of
all adidas players with a nice buffet lunch. Always
before a Grand Slam there are a lot of things you must
do with sponsors and the media. It is all part of being
a professional athlete. It can sometimes be a bit tiring
but I always do my best to promote the sport.
I’m really feeling the excitement of this Grand Slam tournament.
All Grand Slam tournaments are exciting but maybe this
is the most exciting because it is the start of the year
and also I love being here in Australia.
My first round opponent Vania King is a great young player and she
will be very dangerous. I am just looking forward for
the tournament to begin.
Love

Ana
crushed Vania King in the
first round of the Australian Open 6-2 6-0 for 56 min.
Winners score is fantastic 29-3.
King had absolutely no weapons,
nothing to hurt Ana with. She just stood there and
watched winners fly past her, and if she went for her
shots she always made huge errors. Her serve is abysmal.
Match statistic
“I’m really happy the
way I played today,” said Ana. “At the start of the
match my serve wasn’t so good but it really improved in
the second and I even hit an ace on my second serve!”
“I think the first match is always tough, that’s for sure, but I’m
really happy I could focus on what I have to do, and do
what I was doing in practice, like moving forward a lot.
I was really pleased with that.
“I started pretty well. I broke her twice straight away, then
my first serve percentage went down, which I was not
really happy about, but I could focus again, and play
even better.”
Ana was not especially concerned about the roasting hot
conditions: the temperature passed 100 degrees
Fahrenheit; the Extreme Heat Policy came into effect at
Melbourne Park later in the day.
“The conditions were very, very tough. It was really warm.
But coming here you have to expect some of that, too. I
was just trying to focus on what I have to do, because
it's the same for both of us.”

Ana reached the third
round of the Australian Open by beating world No.59
Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Amid scorching hot
conditions on Margaret Court Arena Ana hit 38 winners as
she dominated her opponent for large parts of the match.
“It
was tough conditions again,” said Ana. “This morning
when I practiced, it was pretty cool. When I went out
there, it decided to be really warm. The balls were
flying. It was much quicker.
“She’s a very good player. She’s young, upcoming. She
doesn’t have much pressure. So I think she played very
well today. But I’m really pleased that I took the
opportunities I had and could win this match.”
Ana broke
the Pole in the very first game, recovering from a 40-15
deficit thanks to a succession of ferocious forehands
and a deft drop shot winner. She exuded confidence early
on, executing a fine bounce-smash winner.
Ana painted the
lines in an opening set that lasted just 24 minutes and
contained 15 winners by the 19-year-old, including an
astonishing down-the-line backhand hit off the back-foot.
The No.13 seed showed impressive agility throughout the
match as she ran down several drop shots.
Radwanska,
who is only 17-years-old but has already reached the
fourth round of Wimbledon, began to find her best form
midway through the second set. She kept a great depth on
her groundstrokes and made only eight unforced errors.
She broke Ana in the seventh game and levelled the match
at one-set all.
Crucially,
Ana held in the opening game of the decider, then
stepped up her return game, sealing a crushing a break
with some heavy hitting.
She
saved a break point at 4-2 and sealed victory after an
hour and 26 minutes when Radwanska hit a forehand wide.
Having
struggled with her first serve percentage in Sydney last
week Ana will be pleased to have landed 58 per cent of
first serves in court, while 47 per cent of receiving
points won illustrates the pressure she placed on the
Pole.
That said,
the performance was tempered by 38 unforced errors; it
was not Ana's best display by any means. She said: “Not
every match you play great. But it’s important to play
good enough to win. So I’m really pleased that I went
through this match.”
Match statistic
Ana
will face No.22 seed and former world No.9 Vera
Zvonareva on Saturday. The Russian cruised into round
three with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Tamira Paszek.

Australian Open crowd
favourite Ana Ivanovic exited the tournament in quick
time on Saturday, disappointing her legion of, mostly
male, fans.
Ana lasted just 51 minutes in her third round match
against Russia's 22nd seed Vera Zvonareva.
Zvonareva cruised to a 6-1 6-2 victory in the
match, which was rescheduled from Margaret Court Arena
to under the roof at Rod Laver Arena because of
persistent rain in Melbourne.
Ana made a
nervous start, winning just two points in the opening
two games. Conversely, Zvonareva looked close to the top
of her game. She was a model of consistency and
capitalised fully on Ana’s lack of timing.
A hold to love in the third game wasn’t enough to
settle Ana, who never found any kind of rhythm during
the 51-minute match. The Russian broke two further times
as she took the first set 6-1.
26 unforced errors, 5 double faults
and 50
% 1st serve only for 50 minutes of
game - that statistics for the player of Top20 is
worthless.
Match statistic
“It was just a bad day,” said Ana. “Everything I
tried didn’t work. It is very disappointing, but I have
to give her credit. She played very good and served
really well.”
So one-sided
was the scoreline that some reporters wondered if Ana
was injured. She quickly dismissed this idea. “It’s not
always that you have physical problems when you lose!”
she said while laughing.
“Many
times you learn more from losses than you do wins. I’m
still learning how to deal with the pressure and the
expectation and I have many more years ahead of me.”
Commenting on
the generous support she received during the Australian
summer, Ana said: “They supported me very well, it was
so nice. Every time I enjoy coming back here and I am
looking forward to coming back next year. It was a bad
match but I still like it here!”
