Venus Williams made a
successful return after almost three months out through
injury as she upset sixth seed Ana Ivanovic 6-3 6-4 in
the first round of the Luxembourg Championship on
Wednesday. The
former world number one, playing her first match since
Wimbledon, held off a second-set fightback from Ivanovic
to clinch victory in 71 minutes.
Having
not played since Wimbledon due to a wrist injury,
Williams made a slow start, dropping her serve in the
opening game. But the American
broke back for 2-2 and then broke again in the eighth
game before serving out for the first set.
Ivanovic
recovered an early break at the start of the second set
but Williams broke twice more to lead 4-1.
Ana got one of
the breaks back and had two break points to level at 5-5
but Williams held on.
That is the last match in
Luxembourg for Ana.
“It was a very difficult first
round for me,” said Ana, who served six double faults,
including several at inopportune moments. “She was
playing very well and serving much better during the
whole match. My serve was very up-and-down. That was one
of the most important factors in this match.”
