   Ivanovic Breezes Past Douchevina.

It was nearly dusk and a bit breezy when on a similar evening last year Ana Ivanovic of lost in the juniors finals at Wimbledon. Twelve months later and having jumped a massive 608 spots in ranking, the No.19 seed from Serbia & Montenegro saw off the Russian Vera Douchevina in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

Douchevina, a Wimbledon junior champion in 2002 who won her title by defeating the then little known Maria Sharapova, struggled against Ivanovic's fine form. The Russian won the toss and elected to receive but failed to hold on her serve. The early break boosted Ivanovic's confidence and soon she was leading by 3-0. She was on the course of winning the fourth game but spoiled it after repeating double faults and was broken.

Annoyed for giving away the game, Ivanovic - a quarter-finalist at Roland Garros - was more focused in the next game, gaining a break point but the Russian managed to hold on. Ivanovic spilled another of her service games but made up for her mistake by breaking Douchevina twice and claiming the set 6-4.

The next set looked poised for a tight finish as Ivanovic twice failed to hold her serve, giving away a number of double fault. But once more she thrived on receiving serve, hitting winners with sparkling regularity from the baseline. Ivanovic unleashed an array of shots from her arsenal as she reached the second round with relative comfort.

УIt was tough because it was first match on a grass court, first match since Paris. IТm pretty happy with how I played, although my serve wasnТt going very well today. [But] I put her under pressure on the returns.Ф

Though she was unable to maintain such a strong start, Ana never looked like losing the match, even when Douchevina broke early in the second set. Ana levelled things immediately and went on to win comfortably.

Ana did not appear to be suffering from any effects of the back injury that forced her to miss Eastbourne last week. She ran down several balls during the match, which lasted one-and-a-quarter hours.

УItТs very good, nothing to worry about,Ф she said about the ailment.

    23.06.2005              Ivanovic Marches On.

Hunters of the Ladies' Singles title beware. A teenage Serb is on the prowl and her ferocity so far hasn't spared anyone. On the contrary, with every scalp her appetite seems to be increasing.

On Court 13 today, Ana Ivanovic, the 17-year-old star from Serbia-Montenegro, sent out another winning roar. This time her prey was Stephanie Foretz of France. And again it was a straight sets affair, 6-4, 6-3.

Ivanovic began on an aggressive footing. She served hard and mounted an attack of powerful forehands. Her aggressiveness cost her some errors but the No.19 seed confidently turned the deuce around and closed her service game with a 113mph ace.

Both players maintained their serves but Ivanovic showed more control, power and athleticism then her French opponent. She covered her ground quickly, thumped returns for winners and with some brilliant backhands broke Foretz to gain a 5-4 lead.

Eager to finish the set on her serve, Ivanovic conceded three break points. Foretz looked hopeful but was taken aback by the audacity of the Serb. A daunting Ivanovic planted her feet firmly on the centre line and smashed in a couple of volleys to take the game to deuce and then sealed the set with an ace.

At the French Open this year Ivanovic knocked Foretz out in the first round. Then she pulled off a stunning victory over No.3 Seed Amelie Mauresmo in the quarter-finals.

Within minutes Ivanovic had stamped her authority on the second set too. She hit powerful backhands, hammered forehand winners, and found sharp angles. Her serves clocked 111mph, enabling her to win her games to love while dragging Foretz's service games to deuce.

After Foretz was broken in the third game Ivanovic held on to complete her emphatic win.

25.06.2005         Ana loses to Pierce in third round.

AnaТs Wimbledon run came to an end today when she lost 6-1, 6-4 to Frenchwoman Mary Pierce. Ana did not play badly, rather her vastly more experienced opponent was simply too good.

УIt was a good fight but today she played really good,Ф said Ana. УShe didnТt give me too many chances. I had a few but I didnТt use them. I had a few mishits on some important points and I think thatТs what turned the match. My serve didnТt work really well today. I think that was one of the points.Ф

It was a frantic start. Both women served strongly and rallies were at a premium. Then in the fourth game two atypical forehand errors from Ana gave the 30-year-old French Open runner-up a break and, playing some superb stuff, she raced away with the opening set.

Fatally, Ana was broken in her first service game of the set and though she held serve for the remainder of the second set, she was unable to make an impression on PierceТs serve. УShe served really well,Ф said Ana, who was only allowed two break points all match.

УShe really put me under pressure with the serve. I was most of the time holding back, which isnТt my type of game. She was hitting really long and putting me under pressure.

УEvery time I tried to step into the court I made some mis-hits. But still, IТm happy with the way I played the last two matches and there are a lot of things to learn from this one.Ф
